My Efficient Blackberry Storm

Author: Richard Walker

"Can your phone make you more efficient?"

I don't believe in New Years Resolutions because why wait until a new year to make a valuable change? So in early December I went ahead and changed my cell phone from the Palm Treo to the new Blackberry Storm. WOW! What a difference.

First of all I am not an impulse buyer: I can only buy something when it satisfies specific goals or needs. Second I have to exhaust the use of my current tool before I feel justified in making the expenditure. Four years of using the same Treo is enough justification.

My goals were to:

  • Improve my usage of communication tools (I had no idea how easy Blackberry makes it)
  • Reduce or eliminate my need for a computer when on the road (oh yeah, the Storm can do most of what I need when on the road)
  • Consolidate my tools into one
  • Learn the new phone easily (it IS easy to use)

With my Storm I can now take good quality photos (with a flash), record audio notes, listen to music, get directions and maps, manage my calendar and tasks (synchs with Outlook), check the time and set alarms, receive and send emails for work (and personal), keep in touch with my team via instant message, use various applications and browse the web. Oh, and I can also talk on the phone, which has been very good quality thus far.

This one device has eliminated at least six other devices for me, including my computer when I'm on short road trips. Of course the Storm isn't the only Swiss Army Knife available but the clicking screen is amazing compared to the iPhone. Can your phone make you more efficient? It can when you know how and why you'll use its features.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How do I care for my Swiss army knife?
I just bought a Victorinox Swiss Army knife and love it! This is my first pocket knife though, and I want to make it last, well, a lifetime. Any advice on how to properly care for it (maintenance, what not to cut with it, etc)?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Victorinox makes a good knife. Its really not hard to care for, keep it clean and don't pry with it. Most damage I see in knives comes from trying to use it as a pry bar or chisel.( I'm a bladesmith , I repair allot of knives) learn to sharpen correctly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MezIEKGk9T0 It will add years to your blades life because you wont remove to much steel and after the first time of setting the edge it only takes a couple of moments to make it razor sharp.

  2. QUESTION:
Is my swiss army knife original?
My swiss army knife is made by wegner but victronx also makes swiss army knifes which came first?

    • ANSWER:
Victorinox purchased Wenger in 2005. Both companies have been official makers of the Swiss Army standard issue pocket knife. The real question is what's written at the base of your knife's largest blade? A real Victorinox/Wenger knife will have the maker's name stamped into the base of the blade.

Oh, and for the record, Victorinox was the original manufacturer.

  5. QUESTION:
Should I get the Ranger or the SwissChamp Plus? (Swiss army knifes)?
For my birthday I'm getting my first swiss army knife, and I'm wondering if I should get the Victorinox Swiss Army Ranger or the Victorinox Swiss Army Champion Plus. I'm leaning towards the Ranger because it's lighter, and this is going to be my first swiss army knife, so I don't want it to be too big and have too many tools.
This knife is going to be with me a lot of the time (for emergencies), but mostly for camping. Also, is Amazon.com safe for buying these things?

    • ANSWER:
      Get the Blick 2X Jingles.

  6. QUESTION:
Lateral blade play on my Swiss Army Knife?
My SAK (It's a Victorinox SwissChamp XLT) has a bit of play in the large blade, small blade, can opener, and metal saw. This is my first slip-joint, and I'm not sure if a slight amount of blade play is normal or not. If not, how can it be fixed?

    • ANSWER:
side play is normal due to the force on the blade(s) and the size of the hinge pin.

  7. QUESTION:
    Swiss Army Knife Question.?
There are 3 tools on the back of my Swiss Army Knife. I know one of the is a Cork Screw, but i don't know what the other 2 are used for. The first tool is a slender blade with a hole in it. The other one is a folding hook, I don't know its real use . But I sometimes use it to carry groceries. WHAT ARE THESE USED FOR?

    • ANSWER:
The slender blade is an awl. It's used for scoring/marking/making holes in wood, leather, and other hard materials. The hole is to pass cord through so it acts like a giant needle to sew leather (although I'm not sure how effective it would actually be!).

The hook is simply an 'all purpose hook'. It can be used to carry bundles of newspapers, parcels and other items tied with string (or a common plastic carrier bag) with more comfort. It could also be used for tightening rope, untying knots, fastening tight-fitting buttons and a number of other things.
