New Assisted Opening Knives

Author: Dino Reed

As of now, assisted opening knives are still legal within the country. [**] these knives could shortly become reclassified as the opposite, if measures that the U.S. Customs Protection is proposing essentially become the law.

U.S. Customs Protection has proposed revisions of what basically constitutes a switch blade, which is currently against the law in the country. This brand spanking new interpretation deems that assisted opening knives and other knives that feature single-hand operation should be considered illegal, when taking a look at the act that was proposed in 1958.

To be more definitive, the U.S. Customs Protection is scouting for revocation of ruling letters, as well as treatment related to acknowledgments of specific knives that have spring-assisted mechanisms to open. These ruling letters , however , don't actually classify these assisted opening knives as actual switchblades.

the North American state looks to be after these knives now. The U.S. Customs Protection proposes that earlier rulings be revoked on how aided opening knives don't equivalent to switchblades. This proposal is threatening to outlaw any aided opening knives since its totally broad and new definition related to switchblades seems to include every single single-handed opening knife out there, as well as simple pocket knives and basic old school slip-joints.

Today's Fed. definition of switchblades appertains to any kind of knife, which instantly opens through the use of hand pressure, gravity or inertia onto devices or buttons on their handles. Aided opening knives with other knives that need single-hand operation depend on grooves, studs, and other similar devices that are attached to their blades to open the knives. Such blades will require certain manipulation by hand for them to open for use.

If this is put to action, the offer of the U.S. Customs Protection could affect tens of millions of folk that have single-hand operation knives in their possession. In addition, these knife rights indicate that around 80 percent of knives sold in the country employ singe-hand operations. The industry of knives as an entity employs tens of thousands of people while contributing to almost ten billion bucks each year to the economy.

Both advocacy groups of knives are currently voicing out opposition to these measures. The act of the 50s is sort of clear that switchblades need turning on buttons on their handles. Without buttons, it would not be considered as a switchblade. This was defended by diverse cases on lots of levels through the years. The convoluted reasoning within the impending suggestion to reach past the law and expand regulatory purviews through rationalization and excuse for a brand new interpretation would be quite a stretch, if not completely illegitimate.

right now, single-hand opening with helped opening knives comprise the majority of Yank sales of knives. For the majority of knife corporations in the country, they even represent the majority of the knife products. These would refer to knives that US citizens carry along to play and work with every single day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Whats the best way to clean a gummed up assisted opening knife?
I have a Kershaw Ken Onion pocket knife and the assisted open is gummed up with oil from an attempt to keep rust at bay. What would be the best way to clean that?

    • ANSWER:
wd-40 or alcohol. I would try the wd-40 and a toothpick. Good luck. If you try alcohol, use a q-tip and a toothpick. Also, after you get it clean, spray it lightly with wd-40, that will keep rust away.

  2. QUESTION:
Are spring assisted knives legal in California?
I've been reading up on the laws in CA regarding this, but i'm still not quite sure. The blade in question has a safety and pressure to part of the blade is required to open it. Here it is http://www.knife-kingdom.com/11-Spring-Assisted-Opening-Black-Stiletto-Pocket-Knife-Case-P-2289-BK.htm
If this at all helps, it is for southern CA, for possession in home.
Thank you to anyone that can help

    • ANSWER:
Under California state law, non-switchblade pocket knives that are concealed in the closed position can be legally carried, concealed or open-carry. Fixed-blades must be carried openly. Knives that are disguised as something else (belt buckle, shotgun shell, etc.) are completely banned. Switchblades may be owned privately in the home, but not street-carried; while not specified, most people assume that transport is legal on the same basis as a gun: locked in the trunk in a locked container. Cane swords are completely banned.

SECTION ONE: THE SWITCHBLADE/LEGAL FOLDING KNIFE RULES

      WHAT'S LEGAL:

Your lockblade folding knife should have a thumbstud, thumb"hole", thumb "disk" or similar push-thingy, so long as the "thingy" is attached directly to the blade (versus on the grip and linked up via a gearbox of sorts). It should not have a spring that does ALL the opening (yes, the Kershaw Ken Onion series seems to be OK). And finally, the blade needs to have at least some tendency to stay closed in the pocket or whatever bias a "bias towards closure" or "detent" (discussed in more detail later in this chapter).

As long as it's got all that, and the vast majority (including all eight knives discussed at the bottom of this document) do, it cannot be "declared a gravity knife or switchblade" even if you can snap it open with relish :) . And you can carry it concealed so long as it's concealed in the FULLY closed position, or open-carry if that's your thing (not recommended for BIG stuff, in case you happen on a town with a funky local ordinance or a really cranky cop).

  3. QUESTION:
can i carry around a spring assisted pocket knife with a 3in blade in las vegas?
hi, i have a spring assisted pocket knife with a 3in blade and i live in las vegas, i was wondering if it is withing the law to carry it in my pocket. and its not an "automatic knife" were u press a button to open it, its spring assisted were i have to open the blade partially then the spring takes over.

    • ANSWER:
Yes. I carry one regularly myself.

  4. QUESTION:
What is considered "concealed carry" for a pocket knife?
I currently carry a regular opening pocket knife(no assist or switch) in my pocket with a pocket clip. Does that mean I am carrying a concealed weapon or is it not concealed since the clip is showing?

Also, is switchblade legal in Florida if carried in the same way?

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't consider a pocket knife a weapon; it is a tool. I carry one in a belt holster just so it will be handy. I don't know about Florida, but in Oklahoma, you can own a switchblade, but you cannot carry it.

  5. QUESTION:
How do you open this type of a "Spring assisted" pocket knife?
I am buying this knife on eBay
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350370668925
I did not understand the guys answer when I asked him this question....
    he only said back to me this;
    Dear perry182,
spring assisted does not mean switch blade, the
blade still comes out from the side (not straight
up) but with speed. no button to push. thanks.

Please give me a better answer than his...
How do you open the knife if there is no button to activate the spring? Pull on the blade with your fingers like a regular pocket knife and then it comes the rest of the way on it's own once you get it started by griping the blade and pulling on it? I dont understand what "Spring assisted" means with regards to how do you open this knife?
Thanks in advance for your answer,
    Perry in FL
It sucks I thought I was buying a switchblade knife, but oh well, it was only seven bucks, including shipping. Not bad for .50 even if it aint what I wanted. Can you buy one on the web anyplace? What is "Code" for
    "switchblade"...."automatic knife"?

    • ANSWER:
It looks like the bottom guard that keeps your finger from sliding from the grip onto the blade will be exposed on the top when it's closed. All you do is use your index finger to pull that part away from the end the blade ends up on. The video might help you more...

  6. QUESTION:
Best "left hand friendly assisted opening Knife on Amazon for Ken Onion Leek?
I have a sog bowie hunting knife and a sog flash ii black tini tanto knife that I bought earlier this year and am looking to buy a second every day carry kind of knife. Maybe something smaller and I could just carry two.=) Anyways the flash ii is an assisted opening folder that is medium size and the black length is 3.5 inch. I was thinking maybe a ken onion leek might be good. I'll pay a little over the budget for quality but I have a amazon gift card and don't want a lot of cash out of pocket considering I already have a great knife. Please send links because I know there are different models and pricing.

Leek- cheapest I can find please tell me if the steel is any good, I know they are sharp and have great reviews. I just don't know if they stay sharp or if i can re sharpen easily like a sog.

Last but not least I'm left handed and it's a hassle to close my sog assisted opening knife. The leek I think is a lot easier for lefties...

    10PTS!!

    • ANSWER:
Personally, I don't like the Kershaw Onion pocket knives. All of the ones I've handled have scales that are way too smooth and way too slippery to do any serious knife work with. Neither do I like any folding knife whose blade doesn't lock open, 'like a bank vault'.

For a small pocket knife I like to carry and use a Swiss Army knife with a single lockable 3.5 inch blade. For a larger folder I use a pair of CRKT knives with 3 1/2 - 3 3/4 inch blades and LAWKS knife safety.

Here's my Swiss Army Knife - The one that's sitting on top of my backup drive as I type -

Here's my own EDC folding knife. I own 5 of them and have carried one in either a Del Fatti or a Wm Tucker custom-made belt sheath, almost everyday, for the past 12 years. (Interestingly, 12 years ago, I paid .00 for my very first one - Which I still own and love dearly!)

I know knives; I even wrote a book on knives and knifefighting that, both, Ed Parker and Gil Hibben profusely complimented me on. (Too bad I couldn't get it published!) Here's a few pictures of what I carry everyday:

  7. QUESTION:
What type of steel will give me a super sharp knife blade? ?
I don't want something that will rust if you leave a fingerprint on it(some do) but definitely a step or three above 440C, which is pretty good.

I also would like to know the best company to buy from that makes knives with that steel. I'm looking for a folding pocket knife, probably assisted opening.

    • ANSWER:
Go with kershaw if you want assisted opening. their sandvic steel can get scary sharp and is stainless, but its only about the level of 440C. If you have ~0 to spend, got with Benchmade's nitrous stryker. D2 is a very tough, sharp steel, but between stainless and carbon steel in rust resistance. Other steels to look at are vg-10 (spyderco, look at their wave feature), 154cm, bg42, s30v, s60v, s90v, and the absolute best are SGPS laminated steel (Fallkniven U2), zdp-189 (spyderco again) and INFI (Busse, VERY expensive but worth it).

Are some too bulky? Which one would be more useful to him?

    • ANSWER:
It is incredibly difficult to pick an all-purpose knife for someone else, even if you know him very well.

I'm a bit of a knife freak myself, and spent over 20 yrs in the Army, so I asked myself which one I would be more likely to buy for myself.

Frankly, I believe I'd pick #4. It's simple, basic, and isn't going to bulk up the pocket. It doesn't have all those fancy extras ... but generally those are pretty bad compromises for the tool they're trying to replace.

For me, I'd pick # 4 -- AND also get him a good-quality Leatherman multi-tool, with a pouch. The total should be about the same as the high-end Swiss tool, but he'll have much more useful, functional tools overall. I think he'll find this combination a lot more useful, both in the Army and for general carrying, with better choices of what to carry under different circumstances.

      Good luck to you both!

Is the Knife the Greatest Tool Ever Invented?

Author: Paul

July 16th, 2008

What is the greatest tool ever invented by man? Is it the wheel? Or perhaps screwdriver? Some people think its money. But time and time again I come down to just one tool that I believe is greater than all these. And if you're guess was the knife-you're right!

According to Wikipedia, the knife has its origins dating back as far as 2.5 million years ago, and has been found in every culture.

I will tell you why the knife is the greatest tool ever invented by man. Besides the knife having countless uses there is none more important than for survival.

Think about how many times you've tried to use your fingers to a€œprya€ open that stubborn box, package, or plastic from Walmart with great frustration and misery. Or that time you we're looking for something to wedge that a€œthinga€ open (whatever that thing may be).

Of all the people that have been stuck in the woods, or even on the side of the road somewhere, a knife has probably been pulled out more times than even a tire-iron.

The knife is also the ultimate survival tool. You can use it to craft more weapons, or for hunting. It is used as an eating utensil, box opener, letter opener, and can be your best friend in times of danger.

Knife makers go through painstaking work and skill to bring you the best in quality and precision. Some make the knives with high-carbon steel, and coat them with titanium nitride or other scratch resistant chemicals.

Just as there is a Martini suited to your taste, there is a knife suited to your taste. I've seen pink and purple-coated pocket knives designed for women with a beautiful ergonomic grip and sleek appeal. On the other hand, there are also knives that are camouflaged, with serrated edges for the a€œoutdoorsa€ type a guy.

My recommendation for picking out a knife are:

1. Make sure the knife is alluring to your eye. It must a€œjumpa€ out at you when you see it.

2. If you intend on keeping this knife til the day you die, then put some money into it. In other words, a descent knife can go for or more. Be careful if someone is trying to charge you more than what seems reasonable. I've seen knives as much as 0 or 0 (seriously) and it is simply not necessary for practical purposes. The one I carry was around and has a life-time warranty.

3. Forget the Name Brand. Unless you're trying to make a fashion statement, you do not need to worry about the brand.

4. Think about what you are using it for. If it has multiple blades, saw, and tooth pick you might as well get a Multi-tool instead of a pocket-knife.

5. To see pictures of some good looking knives visit: http:www.DragonDefenseSupply.com/foldingknives.htm

A man without a knife is like a flat beer-no taste and no class. No man should be without a pocket knife as his "silent partner."

For five years I've carried my Smith & Wesson folding knife in my right pocket. I've known others who've had theirs for well over 20 years.

An old boss of mine tried to confiscate my knife and I proudly told him that its for utility purposes only. He became adament about taking it, so I told him that if he took it from me, he would have my resignation statement on his desk in the morning. He commented no further and went on with the next topic of business.

Hail to the knife! Without a doubt, the greatest tool on earth has served man well and deserves great respect and admiration from all.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Does any one know where i can get a new oldtimer pocket knife with carbon steel blades online other than ebay?
I want to know where i can get a brand new oldtimer junior stockman 108ot pocket knife with carbon steel blades. I have had old timers all of my life and cannot find them anywhere. Please tell if you know or if you have one.

    • ANSWER:
I am sad to say Schrade Cutlery the maker of Old Timer Brand Knives, went out of business a few years ago and the brand names were sold off. The new knives(made overseas) have Stainless steel blade for the most part. There are thousands of Old Timer knives out there and you will just have to look around at yard sales and E-bay and the like to find what you are looking for. Another possible source would be small old time hardware stores that may have some old stock left over from years before. Smokey Mountain Knife works may also be a source for some of the old carbon steel blades as they purchased a large quantity of the old stock when the company was auctioned off. In the last few years a lot of the blades were made from stainless steel because that is what the market demanded. People did not and do not want to take the time and effort to maintain and care for a carbon steel blade. I am one of those people who still loves a good carbon steel blade for the superior edge holding and ease of sharpening it offers as well as just having a great appreciation of history and tools. I hope this answer helps you find what you are looking for and here are a few tips to help you identify a carbon steel blade. On a used knife the blade will generaly have a dark tint almost black because carbon steel reacts to acids and other elements by forming a dark patina. you may also see some surface rust. The rust is easy to remove if it is not too bad with a little light oil and some steel or bronze wool. I would choose the bronze wool as it will not leave behind microscopic fibers or residue that will also rust over time. You can find it at boating centers or even Home Depot. Any good light oil works, 3 in 1, WD-40 will work, liquid wrench even light motor oil will work well. Be careful and work slow and steady. After a good cleaning sharpen her up and enjoy a great knife for years to come. If you see a knife and it is new and shiny you can plunge it into a potato and if the blade turns black you have carbon steel, you can also try a magnet most carbon steels will be attracted to the magnet and most Stainless will not because they do not have enough iron it them. There are exceptions to both rules but it is an easy way to tell the difference, and most people do not carry a potato around with them LOL. Best Of Luck I hope you find what you are looking for.

  2. QUESTION:
How do you tell if a knife has a carbon steel blade or not?
I want to see if my case pocket knife has carbon steel blades or not. I want to know what I can do to see if it is ive heard if a magnet sticks to it then it is and if you stick it in a potato and it turns black it is what are some more ways?

    • ANSWER:
It'll rust very fast if it's carbon steel.

  3. QUESTION:
    Good carbon steel knife?
i want a good modern carbon steel (not stainless) knife. trying to keep it under 50$ also nothing to gruesome just a small pocket knife. thank you
it would be nice for it to be only one grind

    • ANSWER:
Well, unfortunately it is quite difficult to find non stainless steel folders these days.
You do have a few options.
Opinels are as usual carbon steel, actually all steels are carbon steel, including stainless. Stainless just has 114%+ Chromium.
Benchmade used to make M2 steel knives, which is very good, had one for a long time, still with me, review here - http://www.zknives.com/knives/folding/benchmade/bm710ax.shtml
They did make other folders in M2 steel, but the thing is those are out of production and the cost is very high.

Spyderco made M4 steel folder knives, and so did Benchmade. Although, both are outside of 50$ budget.

I guess Opinels are best option.

  4. QUESTION:
Sharpening Stone for Pocket Knife Question?
What is the best Sharpening stone to Sharpen a High Carbon Steel Pocket Knife. Im thinking of a Wet Stone and what is the best grit to keep it sharp.

What is the best technique to sharpen it, I
Ive watched a few ways on youtube and when they sharpen in they slide it forward going with the blade, but my Grandfather slides in back when sharpening. which way is better.

If you dont understand I will try give you a better example

Youtube People- Just say the sharp part of the blade is on your right , when they sharpen it they slide it go to the right ->

Grandfather way - The sharp part of blade is still on the right, but sharpens it by sliding it to the Left. <-
Which way is the best to sharpen it

    • ANSWER:
You want the stone to cut (or polish) into the edge of the blade. This means that, by your definition, you want the sharp part of the blade and the movement to be to the right.

Your Grandfather was, 'dragging' the blade across the stone. He might have done this in order to protect the blade from scratches; but, it's not the correct way to sharpen a knife.

Keep the angle of the blade at 15 degrees, or more, above the stone; keep the stone oiled; and you won't scratch anything. Don't rock the blade up and down while you're moving it; try to hold a steady 15 degree angle. Move the blade from bolster to tip as you push it along (and into) the stone.

I tell this to everyone who asks me. Very few listen. Then they'll tell me, 'I should'a listened!' Yeah, they should have:

IT TAKES AWHILE TO LEARN HOW TO SHARPEN A KNIFE BLADE CORRECTLY. PRACTICE ON YOUR OLDER KITCHEN KNIVES BEFORE YOU START WORKING ON AN EXPENSIVE BLADE.

      (You've been warned!) ;)

  5. QUESTION:
Are very old case brand pocket knives of any value?
I have one that is at least sixty years old.I'm pretty sure it is a ' fish' model with a carbon steel blade. This knife has seen some hard usage and the tip of the blade is broken and It has a buck horn handle. Any information on this subject appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
If you think they are valuable, call an auction house. They have people that can answer your questions or even pay you a visit if they think it's worthwhile. Hope it helps.

  6. QUESTION:
The Best way to clean "pocket knives".?
Can someone find a more detailed way? Regarding "CASE" knives? Thank you

    "Knife Care Instructions"

Stainless steel blades and other components minimize (but do not eliminate) the weathering effects of liquids and oxidation. Not all knives use stainless steel. Older knives, and some newer ones, use carbon steel that is more susceptible to effects of the elements and may need more frequent care. Knife performance and longevity are enhanced by regular care:
Clean the entire knife regularly, including blade, pivot points and locking mechanism. If possible, clean it without immersing into liquid (spray cleaners work well). If you immerse in liquid (water, soapy water, or solvents), dry thoroughly after cleaning, then oil blade and moving parts. Regular cleaning and oiling should take care of sticky residue and light surface oxidation or beginning rust formation commonly found on knives.
Discoloration of metal: Discolored metal has a blue/grey/black color, is a sign of oxidation, and precedes rust.
On non-stainless steel: Discoloration is common and can provide a barrier against oxidation. Regular cleaning will keep discoloration from turning to rust.
On stainless steel: Stainless steel does not discolor easily. Discoloration should be regarded as rust waiting to happen and should be cleaned immediately.

    - Rust: Rust has a reddish-brown color. Rust will eat pits into your blade and contaminate what you cut. Light rust can be cleaned with oil. Heavier rust needs to be cleaned with more abrasive action, such as cleaner, polish, or plastic cleaning pad.
    - Cleaning, polishing and lubricating help the performance, safety and longevity of your knife. Buck offers an assortment of knife care products.
    - Store your knife in a dry place (out of the sheath). Lightly wipe the blade with clean oil 2-3 times a year to keep rust from starting (more often if near water).

    "Cleaning"

After using your knife, it is a good practice to clean and dry your knife (the entire knife, not just the blade). Even for blades that are made with corrosion-resistant stainless steel, prolonged exposure to the elements can cause the steel's surface to oxidize. Folding knives should be kept clean of debris, particularly the locking device on lock-blade knives.
For your convenience, the Knife Center provides superb knife care products including Sentry Solutions products, White Lightning Clean Streak and several knife care kits. White Lightning Clean Streak is a completely residue-free metal prep that's easy to use. Just spray and wipe-no rinsing required. Metal Glo Premium Polishing Paste is a formulation of aluminum oxide that is perfect for cleaning and polishing many metal surfaces.
As an alternative, chemical solvents such as Acetone, nail polish remover, MEK, alcohol or paint thinner may be used to clean your blade. Use care with these solvents, as some, such as acetone, nail polish remover, white gas, or brake fluid may damage some knife handles. Avoid harsh detergents that contain Chlorine (mostly powders, including some for washing dishes and clothes), which can accelerate corrosion of the blade steel.
Avoid prolonged immersion in liquids (water, solvents, etc.). This can have a detrimental effect on not only the metal parts, but handles made of wood or other porous materials as well. Before using your knife on food items, wipe clean with alcohol, or wash with hot soapy water and rinse clean. Remember to re-clean and lubricate your knife after the food job is done.

    "Lubricating"

Periodically, and always after cleaning, apply a small amount of lubricant to the working parts of the knife, particularly the pivot points of a folding knife. Then apply a thin film of lubricant to the entire surface of the blade. This will help prevent surface oxidation and corrosion from moisture.

    • ANSWER:
There are a few different ways to clean a Swiss Army style pocket knife, Leatherman-type multi-tool, or simple single-blade knife. The most important thing about knife cleaning is to do it often. If you let too much grime, grease, and grit build up, then it will be harder to clean your knife. So, keep it as clean as you can while out in the field and do a more thorough job when you get home. Additionally, always keep the hinges of your knife lubricated either with light cooking oil or WD-40.

Method 1: De-greaser and Lubricant - General Knife Cleaning and Maintenance

You will need: Either WD-40 or Break Free, a towel and a toothbrush.

This might be the simplest way to clean a knife. Unfold all the blades of your Swiss Army, Leatherman, other pocket knife or multi-tool. Using either a corner of the towel or a toothbrush, apply Break Free to the knife. The lubricant helps loosen any gunk or buildup on the knife. Use the toothbrush to scrub any hard-to-get places. Wipe off the excess (now dirty) oil with a towel and apply a drop of clean lubricant (WD-40 or light cooking oil) to the hinges. This method should remove the majority of dirt and grime and will not harm your knife in any way, but if you are still having problems, see methods 2 and 3.

Method 2: Boiling Water - A Very Thorough Knife Cleaning

You will need: Pot of boiling water, old toothbrush, tongs, clean towel, lubricating oil (such as WD-40 or light cooking oil) Warning: Only clean your knife using this method if it has no plastic parts or you can keep the plastic away from the boiling water.

To get started, unfold all the blades and tools on the pocket knife, multi-tool, or simple folding knife. Using tongs (so you don't burn or cut yourself), put the knife into the boiling water for about 45 seconds. Remove your knife using tongs, and set it on a clean, dry towel and allow it to cool off and dry. You can also carefully drain the boiling water and add warm (not cold) water to the pot to help speed the cooling process. If there is gunk built up on the knife that did not come off in the water, you can use an old toothbrush to scrape it off, but make sure not to actually touch the hot metal with your hand. Once the knife is dry, put a few drops of oil on the hinges (wipe off any excess) before closing all the blades of your tool and putting it away.

Method 3: Dishwasher - For Lazy Knife Cleaners

You will need: a Dishwasher and a dry towel

This is the least thorough and most damaging way to clean your knife, but for the short term, it definitely works. Make sure to use a mild dish detergent, and don't run the dry cycle. Simple remove your knife, dry it with a towel, and add some oil or lubricant on the hinges afterwards. There is a risk if you leave it in the dishwasher for too long afterwards that rust will build up, so make sure to remove it and dry it off promptly.

  7. QUESTION:
I've just bought a Swiss Army Knife- should I buy an actual knife too?
Hi! I am just starting to get interested in outdoor recreation and survivalism and I am currently trying my hand at camping, climbing, hiking, orienteering etc etc.

I've bought a S.A.K as I thought that for £15 all it's functions would come in handy around the house as well as outdoors, and I wouldn't be using it too heavily.

My question is, for when I head out in to the British countryside for long periods, should I have another dedicated knife for heavier work? The blade on a S.A.K isn't great.

If so what sort of knife should I opt for, with a budget of around £20-£30? There are so many types and materials I'm really lost! Sheath-knife, folding knife, carbon blade, steel....

What sort of size blade is ideal? I aim to be outdoors for up to a fortnight at a time in British wilds (breacon, exmoor) and so want something capable but that isn't going to seem over the top. Where should I keep the two knives, in a pocket or my pack?

    Thanks for any serious help!
PS, I know I've asked a question similar to this before but I'm hoping for a definitive answer. Also I am well aware of British knife laws so please don't bring that argument up, nor the fact that knife crime is rampant in certain towns across the UK- I'm a responsible adult and the knife will be used for what it was made for, not killing teenagers.

    • ANSWER:
In life I would buy the tool that is designed for the job. If you want a knife, buy a knife, if you want a bottle opener buy a bottle opener.

So yes, I would get a good quality knife. Blade about 5" long should be OK and make sure the blade is good and able to be sharpened. You get what you pay for afterall - and £15 for 10 tools or £15 for one tool wonder which would be better quality.

Apparantly you should go for one with a wooden handle (unvarnished),and I think Ray Mears does one that he (obviously) recommends - looks OK.

Fixed blade is better - a sheath knife - wont collpse and chop your fingers, failing that a lock knife.

You are unlikely to need a knife in a hurry when you are out, you should have time to get it out of your pack - so dont carry it in your pockets (easy to forget about it, go to the pub and then get arrested for carrying a knife). If you are stopped when you have your pack on you with the knife, a police officer will appreciate that you arnt carrying it to cause trouble and is part of your outdoor kit (unlikely you will get stopped though)

All in all, be sensible. Get a 5" fixed blade with wooden handle and a good quality blade. You might want to invest in a stone to sharpen it with too.

Knife Throwing Tips

By Steve Efren

Have you heard of the unique sport of knife throwing? That's right, knives can be used for more than whittling wood or cutting vegetables. This exhilarating activity requires some foresight, since it does use sharp knives. Before trying your hand at knife throwing, you'll need to select the right throwing knives, and then learn how to grip and throw the knife.

The type of knife used for knife throwing has a significant impact on its flight through the air, as well as your enjoyment of it. Knives made for throwing typically do not have a handle, unlike other knives. Look for a high-quality blade that will stick into the target without bending or breaking. Most knife throwers favor a knife between 12 and 16 inches long with a fairly significant weight, so that it will not drift in the wind.

One of the most important factors in knife throwing is the balance of the knife, which is necessary for controlling its spin through the air. To throw the knife with an ideal spin, the heaviest part should leave your hand first, whether this is the tip of the blade or the other end. By choosing a balanced knife, you can throw your knife by either the blade or the handle. An unbalanced knife must only be thrown by one end.

What kind of edge should your throwing knife have? Beginners should use knives with blunt edges to avoid slicing their hands as they practice. Some competitions do not allow the use of sharp-edged knives. However, many expert knife throwers prefer to throw knives with very sharp edges, and in fact sharpen their knives between every throw.

What should you be throwing the knife at? A thick piece of durable wood makes a good target. The knife should be able to penetrate the target, so metal and concrete make poor choices. Only throw knives well away from people, buildings, and other objects that may be damaged by the flying knife. For safety, make sure there is 100 feet of free space in all directions.

Now, how do you grip and throw the knife? Beginners should first try to master the "hammer grip." Hold the knife around the handle, like you would hold a hammer. Then place the thumb along the blunt spine of the blade. Stand about ten feet from the target, and only increase the distance once you've mastered this throw. Place your left foot in front of your right foot, and rest your weight on your right foot. Slightly bend your knees, and extend your throwing arm in a straight line towards the target. Without moving your shoulders, arc your arm back until the knife is positioned next to your head. In one fluid motion, swing your right arm forwards. When the knife is pointing at your throwing target, release it, while shifting your weight to your left foot. Follow through with the swing of your right arm to put the right spin on the knife.

Throwing a knife well takes a lot of practice. Be sure to use the right knife and follow necessary safety precautions as you begin throwing knives at a target!

and are there any other brands like these that make knives wenger or victorinox... as in the different tools (pliers, screw wdriver etc.)

    hehe thanks...
oh and i do wanna carry it around in my pocket, so im not really looking for a leatherman....

    XD
oh, haha... what does the shackle opener and marlin spike do on the skipper??

    • ANSWER:
If you think you'll need to use the pliers often then it might be worth getting a 'Leatherman style' tool. The Victorinox SwissTool Spirit is a great choice, but you could also look at the Leatherman range or even Gerber and SOG tools (only go Gerber if you're on a very tight budget; they're not as high quality as Leatherman or Victorinox).

They're quite different knives; why don't you take a look at the full Victorinox catalog? They make just about every combination of tools you could ever wish for, and you'll be able to find the perfect one for you. Link to catalogue below.

Personally I'm not keen on the Wenger tool designs, but there's no difference in quality; Victorinox owns Wenger.

The Gist To Hunting Supplies

Author: Philippe De Tiege

If this is your first time hunting, it is good to know a little about hunting supplies you will need. Hunting supplies vary with the type of hunting. Hunting is a practice that dates back into historical times. Since the prehistoric period, hunting is a skill that is important to homo sapiens survival - our ancestors hunted for their survival. Today, hunting is a sport that many take on as recreation or as an alternative meat source. For many, hunting is a way to enjoy the wilderness and for that to be an enjoyable experience, it needs preparation and good hunting supplies. Because your hunting supplies are such an important part of your trip, you will want to keep in mind that once in the wilderness, you will not be able to buy extra food or forgotten equipment.

Depending on what you are on a hunt for, hunting supplies varies and your needs may differ with what you are hunting for. Also, depending on where you are from hunting different animals require different license and season as well. So pack your hunting license, tickets and permits with you whenever you go on hunting trip. Nothing spoils the fun more than being apprehended by officials and your hunting trip is shortened. However, hunting supplies is the gist in this article and this is a step by step guide to your basic hunting needs.

Whether you are hunting fowls, deer or moose there are some hunting supplies that you will need to have, which is the basic. Animals have a keen sense of smell and it is likely that they could sense your presence even before you spot them. The first thing on your hunting supplies' list should be Scent Control. You will need the basic wear hunters use to limit their scent like balaclava hunting headwear, base layer hunting pants, out camouflage pants, camouflage shirt, boot socks, hunting radar hat, and gloves. Of course, they even have camouflage wear for colder seasons as well. With this as your first items on your list, it is time to move to hunting equipments.

Basic equipments that you should have in your hunting bag:

1. A map

2. A compass

3. Rifle with at least 10 cartridges

4. A good standard binoculars

5. A Swiss Army knife

6. A large skinning knife

7. A saw (optional: for sawing off antlers, horns, legs and ribs)

8. A good cotton game bag

9. A good nylon string to hang your game meat

10. Garbage bags

11. A good backpack to carry all your hunting equipments

Last but not least, if you decide to hunt for more than a day, which is likely because some hunts and traps requires more than a day to take effect, you might want to include food and shelter as part of your hunting supplies.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Benchmade Knives?
I'm Looking at buying a Benchmade Pocket knife and i just wondered if that is a good brand of knives. I've never heard of this brand and just wanted to know if this would be a good investment of my money.
this is the link to the knife that i am looking at http://www.gpknives.com/item/benchmade-mini-griptilian-tanto.html

    • ANSWER:
i have heard alot of the benchmade knives they dont quite equal up to the 0 microtechs but the knive you have picked out looks well spent i would try to find it cheaper if you can but from what i see it looks like a nice peice of metal hahahaha

  2. QUESTION:
Which is the best Pocket Knife?
I need a single blade, durable, pocket knife.
    Benchmade, SOG, or Kershaw.

    • ANSWER:
Personally I think customer service is a fairly important part of the equation in finding the best pocket knife. For all the criteria involved, I'd put my money on Benchmade. If you're not looking for an opening-assisted knife, have a look at the Benchmade Griptilian. They're amazing knives and I can't speak highly enough of them.

I have many of each brand you listed. The SOG's I have, I've determined the blades are a little thin. They hold an edge well, but don't stand up well to heavy use that well. I've broken two and never cut anything it wasn't supposed to cut. The lockup on any I've felt has never been 100% either.

I like Kershaw blades and they hold their edges well, but overall I prefer the heft, grip, and steel of a proper Benchmade knife (Blue box). The only Benchmade knives I couldn't recommend would be their Red Box class; they retail for or less and are made in Taiwan. They are inferior to the Blue Box knives in every way and I couldn't recommend one at all.

  3. QUESTION:
    Benchamde Knives?
I'm Looking at buying a Benchmade Pocket knife and i just wondered if that is a good brand of knives. I've never heard of this brand and just wanted to know if this would be a good investment of my money.

    Additional Details

this is the link to the knife that i am looking at http://www.gpknives.com/item/benchmade-mini-griptilian-mdp-yellow.html or this one http://www.gpknives.com/item/benchmade-mini-griptilian-tanto.html

    • ANSWER:
Very good knives. I've got one that I've been carrying daily for the past 7 years. It holds an edge like crazy...I have on'y sharpened it about a dozen or so times since I got it and it has always been sharp when I went to sharpen it. They can be a little pricey, but they are well worth the price!!!

  4. QUESTION:
Rate these pocket knife brands between 1-10 and tell me why?
    Buck,Kershaw,Gerber,Leatherman,Swiss army knives,Benchmade,Spyderco, and Barlow.

    • ANSWER:
Well, I have a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. I bought it in Switzerland in 1991 and it's still in great condition.

  5. QUESTION:
I'm traveling by train soon, but I have a question since i've never traveled by train?
I always carry a expensive benchmade pocket knife with me and was wondering if I could take it on the train or is it like the airlines? I might also buy a few knives where we are going.
That sucks, you would think by now they would have realized if everyone had a weapon then there would be no need for all this.
You want a weapon of some type for self-defense. A police officer couldn't do anything about a pocket knife as long as it was legal. I'm planning on getting a concealed carry permit soon.

    • ANSWER:
You dont say where you are traveling but if you are in the States, you can carry a knife.
No one is going to check you or your baggage.

Knives are no more offensive nor defensive than a big stick, it is the intentions of the person carrying that constitutes the danger.

  6. QUESTION:
What are the best pocket/utility knives?
I know of the big companies; cold steel, spyderco, benchmade, kershaw, gerber. Are there any other quality knife makers that I am forgetting?

What companies in your opinions make the best overall practical, camping and heavy duty knives? Best bang for your buck? Cheapest but well made? Best service and warranty? The blade will hold up to constant use and/or is easy to sharpen or the company will do it for you free/cheap?

I have two kershaws and I like them. Cheap and reliable and I have not yet to have any problems with them. One is a Ken Onion chive (great little pocket knife).

I am looking for something along the lines of a legal pocket knife in california ( I believe the blade has to be under 2 3/4") and something no bigger than say a six inch blade. Folding or not.

    • ANSWER:
You are going to get lots of different opinions on this so here's mine. For folding pocket knives SOG is great, also their multitools are top notch.

For camping, if you want a heavy duty general purpose knife, get the KaBar. It's good for chopping and other heavy uses, if you don't have a hand axe.

The very best all around knife in the world, in my opinion, is the Frosts Mora, either the clipper or the classic. Under 20.00. Triple laminate steel. You can pound them into a tree and stand on the handle. They are that tough. The steel holds and edge. Considering the cost, strength, quality and workmanship, the Frost Mora is top notch.

  7. QUESTION:
I am addicted to knives. Is this bad?
    No I don't mean that I'm a cutter.

I mean that I like to buy and carry knives.

I carry a knife daily as a tool to open boxes and peel apples etc. I however seem to be on an endless quest for the perfect knife.

I know this sounds irrational and silly to most people but I don't see it as harmful. I collect pocket knives made by Benchmade and Spyderco. You can see these knives at Benchmade.com and Spyderco.com.

I don't constantly purchase knives to the point where I don't have money for food or mortgage or things like that. I just really like the craftsmanship of a good knife. And I don't consider the junk that is sold on QVC or ShopAtHome to be good quality. It's junk.

Is this a bad thing? I mean I somewhat can justify it by saying, well at least I'm not out drinking or at strip clubs or whatever, but I'm not sure if that is right or not.

I'm happily married and have a wonderful little girl.

    What do you think?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
As long as you don't practice murders with knives....he he.
No, there isn't a reason to stop liking knives. Some people like stamps, some other like knives, what's th problem?
If you're happy with your life and you don't want to hurt people, physically or psicologicaly, you're a good person automatically.
Everybody has his own fetishes. (Even I.)
