Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is my writing style any good?
I've written the prologue of a book I am considering writing. I need to know if I am crap, reasonable, half way decent or anything above that.

Having read what's below, would you turn the page the read more? The book is going to be about a serial killer who kills people that most of us would want killed anyway. It will hopefully be dark and gripping. It won't be full of violence like Train Spotting - but it is a book about murder so there has to be some descriptive violence in it. So - here goes.

    Friday 10th April - Manchester
Danny Boyd was extremely angry. He was 27 years old, muscular and tattooed with a completely bald head and a gold earring. He was also in excruciating pain.

Danny Boyd had been angry for as long as he could remember. Even as a 4 year old he’d hit people because he was angry, and at least a dozen times a day he’d find himself very angry indeed.

When he got extremely angry people paid the price. People who showed no respect pissed him off. Danny Boyd had no concept that respect had to be earned. Respect came through pain – other people’s pain. And of course fear. His appearance, his reputation and his voice all came together to ensure that people feared him. Everything about him shouted ‘beware – I can hurt you’.

When a disrespectful little sh*** upset him he’d knock them to the ground and stomp on them. He’d break bones and teeth and eyes and brains. And on the very few occasions that he’d been knocked down himself he’d understood and accepted that it was his turn to be hurt and broken.

But he didn’t understand what had happened today and he was extremely angry about what was happening now.
He ran over in his mind the last 35 minutes of his life, and he simply couldn’t understand them. In his 27 years he’d never experienced anything like those 35 minutes.

He’d been in Tesco buying strawberry flavoured condoms. He always bought flavoured condoms because he always expected that the taste would be important to somebody.

Danny Boyd knew that there were places where you should be as ordinary and as invisible as it was possible to be. Places where there were lots of police and Swiss Army guards, those wannabe cops with a dozen gadgets on their leather belts.

And Tesco was one of those places. So he’d lined up at the checkout quietly and checked out the little arse of the milf in front of him.

The scrawny middle aged man had politely eased past him in the queue and mumbled something about joining his wife. He was clutching two strawberry yoghurts. Same flavour as the condoms.

‘Yeah ok pal – I’m not in a hurry’ he’d offered, smiling and winking at the milf who’d turned round to let yoghurt man go past.

But then he got very angry. There had been no wife. Yoghurt man paid for his yoghurts and made his way for the door. And the red mist had come down for Danny Boyd. The condoms were forgotten along with the milfs little arse and Danny Boyd was after yoghurt man with a purpose – past the very fat security clown and into the well lit and shiny shopping mall.

Danny Boyd had never understood science and physics at school. And he’d bashed the clever boys who did and intimidated the clever girls who didn’t. But he knew enough science to understand that if he ran fast towards his victims, using his velocity and mass as a weapon, he could knock them to the ground where he could enjoy giving them a severe kicking.

Yoghurt man had his back to him as he made a giant fist to aim at the scrawny neck. He was travelling fast and he knew that this was going to be the king hit knock down of all time.

    But he missed.

And as he missed he tripped on a foot and sprawled into a line of shopping trolleys scraping skin and flesh and the leather from his boots.

In micro-seconds he was on his feet swinging with force and purpose at yoghurt man.

    But nothing connected.

Then something ridiculous happened. Two hand gripped his right wrist like a vice. Their grip was strong and purposeful. And yoghurt man leapt into the air like a circus acrobat. Up came his legs into a sort of sitting position 2 feet off the ground. Then yoghurt man simple fell back to the pavement, with force and gravity, still in the sitting position with his legs parallel to the ground and still gripping Danny Boyd’s wrist.

Danny Boyd screamed like he’d never screamed before as his arm came out of its socket at the shoulder with a tearing of tendons and sinews and raw torn nerves that sent a million anguished messages to his brain. The messages all told the same story.

    F*** – this hurts!

Then he was being bundled into a van. People were gathering and yoghurt man was explaining that he was taking his attacker to hospital.

And now here he was, sitting, hurting and looking at the cracking and sparking Tazer as yoghurt man gobbed off in words he did not understand.

It's two ends are gold color and look stained and have fingerprints on them. I just need to know how to clean it so I can use it again.

    • ANSWER:
First, sharpen your knife . Sharpening produces grit which can fall down in the hinge and creat friction, so lets get the sharpening out of the way.

Next..Use a bit of bleach to clean out the blood and such from inside. The bleach will break down the blood. There are other solvents that will do that too.

Next wash it with soap and water or just drop it in the dishwasher

Follow that up by a penetrating oil to clear out any dirt stuck to previous grease.

Ok.. those bolsters are brass.. a little brass polish will make them shine, and then spray them with a bit of laquer to reduce the future tarnish

Now wash it gently to get rid of any leftover cr*p and then either oil it up or use wd40 on the hinges and the lock release.

WIpe it all down with a clean paper towel and you are done.
