   I know it's qutie a bit to look at, but it's a gift for my boyfriend who's always wanted one. He plans on joining the Army next year and wanted one with an LED light, but I have no idea which to pick out? It's just something he would like to carry around.

   Are some too bulky? Which one would be more useful to him?

     It is incredibly difficult to pick an all-purpose knife for someone else, even if you know him very well.

     I'm a bit of a knife freak myself, and spent over 20 yrs in the Army, so I asked myself which one I would be more likely to buy for myself.

     Frankly, I believe I'd pick #4. It's simple, basic, and isn't going to bulk up the pocket. It doesn't have all those fancy extras ... but generally those are pretty bad compromises for the tool they're trying to replace.

     For me, I'd pick # 4 -- AND also get him a good-quality Leatherman multi-tool, with a pouch. The total should be about the same as the high-end Swiss tool, but he'll have much more useful, functional tools overall. I think he'll find this combination a lot more useful, both in the Army and for general carrying, with better choices of what to carry under different circumstances.

     If that is the round hook that opens out 90 degrees, it's for carrying parcels.

     Idea is that you hook the string that ties the parcel up (the center of the strings where they cross the parcel in the middle), then grab the entire Swiss Army Knife in your hand (like a handle) and let the hook poke out (down) through your fingers, carrying the parcel like a suitcase.

     If it is on the back side of a Victorinox Swiss Army knife it is a multi use parcel carrier. It was designed to carry a parcel by the string that they were traditionally wrapped it. It can also be used to open a knot and some other minor uses. It is a lesser utilized tool on a Swiss Army Knife.

   I've heard a few theories but I'm not too well rounded with though, and I'd like some more ideas on how this works to get even better usage of my knife.

   This fancy little hook, at least thats what it's called on the official website anyways. I've read that it is also called a parcel carrier, in which you put the string of a parcel on the hook instead of your hand to make transportation that much easier. Okay, thats a nice thing to have every other blue moon when I get a string wrapped parcel, what about a more daily usage?

   I've also heard of this being used as a horse shoe cleaner. I don't have any horses nor do I know anybody who does. However I do live near some horses so I suppose if somebody ever came up in dire need to clean his horses shoes, I could come to the rescue.

   Finally, and most relevant to me, I've heard of this being used as a fishing hook. While browsing different knives for my purchase, I considered getting one with a hook disgorger and scaler. However I decided against it because I can disgorge a hook by hand and the scales would get caught in the inner parts of the knife and would be too much of a hassle to clean. I'd either bring a fish scaler or use a stone of sorts in a dire survival situation. I am though interested on how this could be used for fishing, because I do see myself in possible need of a hook if the situation occurs.

   How exactly go about turning ones hook into a fishing rod without breaking or removing any parts of the knife, would I just tie it to a stick and angle it so the hook is just sticking out with some bait?      The hook is called the multi-purpose hook and serves multiple purposes, as they do.
     The picking locks function wasn't mentioned in your Q so perhaps you meet only honest or ...err, secretive people.
     Legitimate lock-picking though is sometimes necessary as when the key to the bureau is lost and the tax forms deadline is fast approaching.
     As a fishing aid it is extremely useful. You can hook it through a fish's jaw and carry the fish like a strung parcel.
     It is an elegant way to carry a fish, and if the fish is a fifteen pound salmon it is a delight to be seen calmly parading along the main street with it swinging gently in the breeze with an air of supremecy as a fiften pound salmon does so well when carried with the aid of a Victorinox Multipurpose Hook.
     For disgorging deep hooks in fish and from the gullets of seagulls after such a bird has made a daring swoop on the bait before it hits the water I use a pair of long Spencer-Wells forceps but the Victorinox Multi-purpose Hook can be very useful for keepng the beak wide open in seagulls and for pulling a hook backwards fom the fish's mouth by inserting the multipurpose hook through the gills.
     Forward extraction of the fishing hook is made quite inconvenient by the geometry of the Victorinox Mulipurpose hook, as is the use of the hook as a replacement or substitute for a sharpened fishing hook for fishing unless a multitude of tools is also opened out on the knife and allowed to gleam in the water like a multitentacled silvery baby octupus, and the quarry is an inexperienced but fully grown cod or marlin for which the opened tools will act as useful accessories to the hook when lodged firmly in the gut of the fish in allowing the fish to be successfully hauled to the boat of a smiling and eager fisherman.
     Equine uses for the hook are numerous, from pulling teeth and unknotting knotted manes to cleaning the rims of spoiled horseshoes after a morning's riding in the marshes.
     Inspection of horseshoes cleaned by a Victorinox Multipurpose Hook have shown the extreme usefulnes of the implement, especially on days following heavy rains resulting in the few dry passages through the marshes being rendered no longer dry.
     The hook is also very useful for hanging Victorinox knives from small branches of trees in the wilderness or from nails or screws in a wall.
     A Victorinox knife is conveniently already fitted to the hook by the manufacturer to make the task very much easier for the user.

   i've been a boyscout for years (gonna say it right now, i don't agree with some of their policies, but it's been fun, and i have learned a lot, don't be hating) and i grew up in a family of handymen, hunters, fishermen, campers, and generally people who carry pocket knives, so carrying a knife, if only a small swiss army knife on a keychain, is pretty much second nature to me. i'm going to be starting college in the fall, and want to know what the general attitude is towards carrying knives on campuses. if it helps, i'm going to montgomery county community college in blue bell, pa.

   i've been brought up with the view that a knife is a tool, not a weapon, not a toy. i use them for literally everything. sharpening pencils, fishing, first aid (sterilized of course), cooking (washed), if you can think of it, i've probably used a knife to do it. if you've ever carried a pocket knife, you understand the utility of having one, if you haven't, you've really missed out on something good.

     Little keychain swiss army type knives are fine; nobody will even care as long as you don't go brandishing it out. A switchblade on the other hand, definitely not.

     I've got a Leatherman Wave and I've used it more, than any other pocket knife I've ever owned.

     Both Victorinox and Leatherman make excellent products, both are very good tools, I don't think you would go wrong with either. You should find a store that has them both and see how they feel in your hand, how heavy they are, the size, etc.

     The SwissTool gives you access to all the blades and things without opening up the knife, with the Leatherman Wave, you have access to the 2 blades, the file and saw when closed, and have to open it up to get to the screw drivers and scissors. I think that is the biggest difference.

     Leatherman products are made/assembled in the USA, if that means anything to you. Victorinox products (I believe) are made in Switzerland.

   What is the best multitool for daily use?
   Im thinking of buying the Swisstool x.

     no. go buy a leather-man instead,they have more functions,like pliers and such. about -60 but worth it,i have five different sizes.don't get confused when i say 5 dif-sizes.

     1 for truck
     1 for house
     1 i carry when not near truck

   • ANSWER:
     100% choose the Leatherman. The Surge and the Wave both offer more tools, have better adaption kits, and are of a higher quality. I like the Wave, but the surge is really good too.

     If you were going to get a Swiss Army tool I would suggest buying the Swiss Tool RS over the Spirit- mostly because of the scissors, but I would never buy a Swiss over a Leatherman.

     The Leatherman has better knife blades (a drop point as opposed to a mostly useless spear point), really good scissors (on both models), and a diamond file on the file tool that is necessary for sharpening fish hooks. Also, the blades lock on the Leatherman so they will never close on your finger... however, I can't fully remember if the Swiss does or does not have locking blades. I don't think it does though. That would be reason enough not to buy the Swiss.

     The saw on the Leatherman cuts branches like butter, but I remember the Swiss also having a pretty good saw.

4. QUESTION:
   Best Swiss Army Knife/Multitool?
   I'm looking for a Swiss Army Knife or Multitool mainly for use in an emergency (or a pinch) but I wouldn't mind a few everyday-like features to be included. I've been looking at the Victorinox RescueTool which seems awesome but I'm wondering if these same tools cannot be found in another product + more?

     Check out Gerber tools, I'd get one of them over a Leatherman. We've had one of each for 7 years, and the Leatherman is falling apart. Maybe we got an irregular one, i don't know. However, the Gerber looks and works like we just bought it.

     I'm pretty sure it's legal so long as you don't carry it around in your pocket when you're out & about - as the police can stop and search you if they don't like the look of yo or if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time - you could be charged with carrying an offensive weapon.

   I know it's qutie a bit to look at, but it's a gift for my boyfriend who's always wanted one. He plans on joining the Army next year and wanted one with an LED light, but I have no idea which to pick out? It's just something he would like to carry around.

     It is incredibly difficult to pick an all-purpose knife for someone else, even if you know him very well.

     I'm a bit of a knife freak myself, and spent over 20 yrs in the Army, so I asked myself which one I would be more likely to buy for myself.

     Frankly, I believe I'd pick #4. It's simple, basic, and isn't going to bulk up the pocket. It doesn't have all those fancy extras ... but generally those are pretty bad compromises for the tool they're trying to replace.

     For me, I'd pick # 4 -- AND also get him a good-quality Leatherman multi-tool, with a pouch. The total should be about the same as the high-end Swiss tool, but he'll have much more useful, functional tools overall. I think he'll find this combination a lot more useful, both in the Army and for general carrying, with better choices of what to carry under different circumstances.

     I would get him the first one of the last two you listed. However I am not a big fan of Swiss Army Knives, I do have a Leatherman Wave though, I have carried it daily for over 10 years and it is still going strong and as I am a rancher and farmer I have had occasion to use it for more things than you can imagine. The only drawback with the Wave is the weight of it if carrying it in your pocket. I carry mine on a belt sheath and never think about it being there.

     That's called a switchblade and they are illegal in most areas of the US because they were often used in street fighting. There's a safety aspect to that too -- accidental opening could be hazardous if you were carrying it in your pocket (could turn yourself into a soprano). You can get folding knifes that open easily one-handed though -- divers and climbers often carry them in case they have to cut a line in a safety situation. You press the safety switch and then shake or flip the knife so the blade swings open, but it is not fully spring loaded (you start to open it manually and then the spring kicks in).

     before you mess them up, go to a guitar store or a hardware store, and buy an allen wrench to adjust them properly.

     Knives: Fine in checked bags, will be confiscated in carry on.
     Wine: Fine in luggage. Limited if traveling overseas.
     Seeds: Fine in luggage. A definite no-no if traveling overseas or to sensitive parts of the US, such as Hawaii.

   Could I be prosecuted for carrying a penknife?
   With the upcoming general election, all the parties talk about cracking down on knife crime.      If its non-locking you are indeed well within your rights to carry it.

     British law specifically states that it is perfectly LEGAL to carry a non-locking folding knife, with a blade under 3 inches, for whatever lawful reason. The police cannot prosecute you or confiscate the knife, unless they have reasonable grounds to believe you will use it as an offensive weapon, the onus is on them to prove that.

     To sum up, New York does not have a length limit. However, it is a "judgement call" state, meaning that knives that look like they were meant as weapons and not tools are illegal, subject to a police officers and later judge's discretion (Matter of Jamie D., 59 NY2d 589 (1983)). A court ruled that butterfly knives are technically not illegal, but that rulings is not very solid nor has it been challenged yet.

     NYC has a length limit of 4" and, in a peculiar twist, requires that you conceal completely when in public. I think the logic is to avoid intimidating or scaring people around you.

2. QUESTION:
   Folding knife disassembly tool?
   I just bought a Jeep knife (JP-1024). Half smooth/half serrated, seat belt cutter, glass breaker, rubber grips on the handle. Great little pocket knife, plus I got it on sale for a decent cost.

   Problem though: It has an unusual type of screw head that holds the blade to the shaft. The top of the screw has 5 unconnected points (indentations) in a circular pattern. I've never seen a screw of this type. I like to do my own maintenance on my knives/tools. What tool do I need to disassemble this knife?

     Drill out the head. Use a gauge to determine the screw size and pitch. Replace with something more common.

   Furthermore, the statutes generally refer only to the following: "dirk," "dagger," and "machete" (none of which are defined), along with "switchblade knife" and "knife which is made an integral part of a belt buckle." NRS 202.350(1) and (2) are the relevant sections about the possession and carrying of concealed weapons:

   NRS 202.350 Manufacture, importation, possession or use of dangerous weapon or silencer; carrying concealed weapon without permit; penalties; issuance of permit to carry concealed weapon; exceptions.

   (b) Paragraph (b) or subparagraph (1) or (3) of paragraph (d) of subsection 1 is guilty of a category C felony and shall be punished as provided in NRS 193.130.

   Therefore, one may not carry concealed any dirk, dagger, machete, or belt-buckle knife. So, what does this mean? Well, there are traditional dictionary definitions for these items that would lead one to reasonably conclude that a pocket knife would not be included in this group. However, one must also be careful of the catch-all "or other dangerous or deadly" prohibition in NRS 202.350(1)(d)(3).

   All in all, there are some LEOs who would interpret the possession of any knife or other weapon to be a violation of NRS 202.350(1)(d). I was once almost arrested by the LVMPD for carrying a 5-inch aluminum kubotan ( http://www.defensedevices.com/gripkubaton.html ) which they called a "dagger" (http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/forum36/20477.html ). The thing has no blade or sharp edges. Yet, the officers involved had no problem with my Ka-Bar TDI Model 1480 Law Enforcement Knife, which has a blade under three inches long (see picture here - http://www.lapolicegear.com/katdilawenkn.html ). Simply idiotic...

   Anyway, if it wasn't enough to worry about NV state law, one must take care to note what area of "Las Vegas" he is in. Most of the Las Vegas Strip with all of the casinos is actually located in the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester. Clark County Code governs these areas: http://municipal
   LVMC 10.70.010 Defined.
   "Dangerous or deadly weapons" includes, but it not limited to:
   (A) Any dirk or dagger;
   (B) Any knife with a blade three inches or more in length;
   (C) Any snap-blade or spring-blade knife, regardless of length of the blade;
   (D) Any ice pick or similar sharp stabbing tool;
   (E) Any straightedge razor or any razor blade fitted to a handle;
   (F) Any dangerous or deadly weapon within the meaning of any law of this State restricting the use thereof; and
   (G) Any cutting, stabbing or bludgeoning weapon or device capable of inflicting grievous bodily harm; and
   (H) Any firearm, as defined in Section 10.66.010, other than one carried pursuant to a valid permit issued by a duly authorized governmental authority or an ordinary rifle or shotgun lawfully carried for purposes of hunting or other lawful sport. The permit requirement does not apply to:
   (1) A person who has not been a resident of the City for at least sixty days; or
   (2) A firearm during the seventy-two hour period
   within which a person is allowed to register that firearm under Section 10.66.040.

   This definition is still quite ambiguous, but it contains similar language to the Clark County Code section above - "a knife with a blade three inches or more in length." However, note subsection G - "any cutting, stabbing or bludgeoning weapon or device." A knife with a blade shorter than three inches is still quite capable of "inflicting grievous bodily harm." Also note that the city code doesn't prohibit the outright possession of dangerous or deadly weapons, just doing so while "loitering":
   CCC 12.04.180 Concealed weapons prohibited without permit.
   It is unlawful, within the unincorporated area of Clark County, for any person to carry upon his person a concealed weapon of any description, including a knife with a blade of three inches or more
   The code states "including a knife with a blade of three inches or more." This might lead one to conclude that a knife with a blade under three inches is ok. However, and this is probably just the lawyer in me, note that the code states "a concealed weapon of any description" (i.e., ALL weapons). One could argue that including the language "with a blade three inches or more" exhibits the legislative intent that anything under three inches would not be considered a "weapon," but linguistically, this does not hold true. The use of the word "including" denotes a list that is a subset of all possible weapons, which includes knives with blades under three inches

4. QUESTION:
   Ebay sales of knives: Do you think knives should never be sold on ebay?
   In the UK there has been a rise in knife crime over the last 3 or 4 years or possibly even longer than that and i know just how it was once documented that people sell knives on ebay. Do you think this is right or wrong?? Many people will state it is wrong because most of the people buying them might be kids or young gang members, whereas there is always the argument that some people just need knives for innocent intended use like to use in the kitchen for instance.

   People always seem to balance the "Knives should not be sold because of knife crime these days amongst people" with "I have the right to purchase what i want from ebay or any similar site" So long as people think like this, i personally see no realistic way that any authority can prevent the sales of these items which sometime are solely being purchased to maim or even kill.

   I just out of curiosity went onto ebay and typed in knives and i saw all sorts of knife types (pocket knifes to swords even). I couldnt believe my eyes and that made me cement my opinion that knives should definetely not be sold over the net. In my opinion, if you need a knife for kitchen related jobs, go to a hardware store. People hide behind anonymity on the internet very frequently with sometimes disastroud consequences.

     The problem is most people will not go on ebay to get a knife when they can purchase one just about anywhere, its a fact that most knife crimes or those caught with knives are of the kitchen variety, it would be impossible to regulate the sale of knives or more ridiculous to ban them as some politicians have stated, the problem is not the knife but those individuals who seem intent on causing injury or death to another person, i have come across cases where a knife was used and the reasons given made me think that some of these individuals belong in a secure mental ward, the law needs to address this and do so in a harsh way and that means if they are caught then they should on conviction get a long prison sentence, these people are not hard-nuts but on the whole cowards and mentally un balanced and this sort of person needs to be removed from society.

   Does anyone have a good name for a gift shop?
   My wife and I are opening a small shop that will have a wide variety of products for sale. We expect to have candles, t-shirts, baseball hats, possibly clothes, pocket knives, etc. This place could offer anything that we can make a profit selling. The problem is we can't think of a good name. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

   He slammed his fists against the steering wheel, that resulted in a momentary sense of pain, but was over ridden by the satisfaction of his anger being taken out. He cursed his useless 67 Chevrolet that wouldn’t even qualify as worthy for a cash for clunker sale. He knew eventually it would happen but why when he was on the run? The authorities knew it was him. He saw himself on the T.V just a day earlier.
   “Wanted. Cesar Sanchez for double homicide on July 28. Suspect was last seen in Salty’s Tavern, LA California. Suspect is approximately 5 foot and 9 inches in height, Black hair and a Scar on the right side of his face. Possibly armed and dangerous approach with caution.” He cursed again at the thought of being captured on the first day. Impossible though. He was out in the middle of no where. No way in hell they could track out him here. The car had died seconds ago but the heat focused into the old car by the window was already killing him. He opened the glove compartment. Some gum wrappers, used up pens, a pocket knife, a assortment of wrinkled papers and a car manual. Nothing useful. He hesitantly stepped out the car, squinting at first to get a look at his surroundings. The heat was even worse outside. The landscape was hazy with heat waves rising from the dead and dry ground. Middle of nowhere. Life seemed inexistent. He looked up and to his guess there wasn’t a cloud in sight. Buzzards circled the sky above him waiting for the next thing alive to drop down dead, so they could devour it. Nothing else in sight except what looked like a abandoned mechanic shop and he squinted his eyes even more..
   “Moe’s Café”
   He wiped off a sweat drop crawling down his scar. He rubbed the same hand across his head as he looked at the café. He turned to his sight to the café with a thought that maybe there was mechanic inside. He started his walk. The Absence of life or anything at all civilized lingered on his mind. He shook the thoughts away. What he really needed was to get out of here before he could get caught. He was easily looking at 30 years of time plus the added time he would receive for the car he stole. He approached the mechanic . He stopped and saw that one of the windows were broken, and the garage was open. So there had to be someone there. He walked towards the garaged but stopped before entering to peer inside the darkness. He hesitated and finally walked in. he fumbled his hands across the wall looking for a light switch when his fingers met a switch. He flipped it and I dim yellow light illuminated the garage.
   “Hello?”
   No answer. He was about to leave when something he looked to his right and something on a table caught his eyes. He looked around again before walking over to the desk littered with broken glass and cigarette butts. It was a hunting knife, with a dried up paint like substance. “Blood?” he thought to himself. As he put the knife down something else caught his eyes under a pile of papers. He moved them away to reveal what looked like a whitish colored stick. He examined the stick more closely to see that it was “A bone”?

     For someone who claims to be a poor writer, this is rather good. I've got a few grammar corrections/suggestions for sentences I think sound funny.
     First, start your first sentence with "Cesar slammed", not "he". "That resulted" should be "which resulted". "Overridden" is all one word.

     "He cursed his useless 67 Chevrolet that wouldn’t even qualify as worthy for a cash for clunker sale." I'd recommend either cutting out everything after "Chevrolet" or splitting it into two sentences: "The stupid thing wasn't even worthy of a Cash for Clunkers sale."

     "He knew eventually it would happen but why when he was on the run?" This was sort of confusing and at first I didn't realize his car had actually broken down. Could try "He'd known it was going to break down eventually, but why did it have to happen when he was on the run?"

     "He looked up and to his guess there wasn’t a cloud in sight." Not sure what you were trying to say here. "To his guess" doesn't make sense. Did you mean "As he'd guessed," maybe?

     "he fumbled his hands across the wall looking..." Capitalize "He". "Fumbled his hands across the wall" sounds funny. Try "He groped for a switch", or maybe just "his hands fumbled for a switch".

     Describing the bone as a "whitish stick" sounds off, too. Admittedly, there aren't many things you can compare a bone to, so that's kind of tricky. You might say something like "what he at first thought was a white piece of pipe..." (since pipe is more circular than "a stick"?)

     Anyways, nice job. Just needs a bit of proofreading and you're good. =]

   “What you doin’ wanderin all the way out here for son?”
